Where does Bonds rank?
With Bonds retiring this week, where does he rank among all time greats?
IMO, in my era (im 39yrs old),Bonds was the best of our era even before the roids, among all time where would you rank him?keep in mind he was a great all around player before the juice, mvp multiple times, gold glove ,stole bases...Thoughts,
One more thing if you had a vote does he go into the HOF,he was a HOF player before the juice.

I'd vote for Bonds after they let Pete Rose in.

Give him an*but I'll qualify it by saying everyone of them (McGuire, Sosa, Palmeiro, etc. included) get one, too and IMHO none of them should be in the hall of fame. Call it what you will, but "juicers" should never be allowed to be alongside those fellows in the Hall of Fame that got their records honestly.

Roger Maris and Hank Aaron still have the records as far as I am concerned. Could not agree more about Pete Rose. He should have been in years ago. Bonds is far and away the biggest asshole I have ever seen in sports.

And, according to this article from ESPN last August, Pete will never get in (primarily because his only chance now rests with the Veterans' Committee rather than the baseball writers):

In 2001, (before the bionic, inflated HR part of his career), Bill James ranked him as the 16th best player of all time. If you just chop off the last decade of his career, the earlier part of his career still places among the best ever. As far as his personality goes, I don't like him any more than anybody else does, but compared to Ty Cobb, who's in the Hall, he was St. Francis of Assissi.
Cheers,
lansdale

I'll say this for Bonds, there were plenty of other drug users but nobody was as good as him. Its too bad we don't know what his "real" stats would be but I would guess he'd still be around 600 HRs. What I don't understand was, if you listened to media and fans, you'd thought he was the only guy on roids. Far from it, but he was certainly the most villified.

Comparing different eras is impossible as pitchers also evolve and get better. Bonds has to be rated the best player of the last 25 years. No one was more respected and more feared. Bonds had games where he was intentionally walked FOUR times.
I balance those lost at bats against the enhanced one and put him in the top 5 hitters of all time.
Ruth faced a lot of pitchers who were pitching on short rest and in later innings when they should have been in the shower. Aaron was consisent but never had the huge dominance of a Ruth or a Bonds. Mays added speed and defense like none of the others and probably rates as the best "5 tool" player of all time.
Bonds leads all time in many categories, but with so many walks (2,558) he may now have the most untouchable record in sports.
Alex Rodriguez may yet wind up the best ever and another discussion will definitely be about his "training methods".
And someone like Ted Williams will always be mentioned. Losing time to wars, especially in his prime certainly cost him over 100 home runs.
Give me these guys for the top 10 as of 2009.
1.) Babe Ruth
2.) Willie Mays
3.) Ted Williams
4.) Barry Bonds
5.) Hank Aaron
6.) Alex Rodriguez
7.) Frank Robinson
8.) Reggie jackson
9.) Lou Gehrig
10.) Joe Dimaggio / Mickey Mantle (tie)
