Help?
This was a original post but here it goes
It's "Total Victory at the Track." Published in 1977 I think. William L. Scott was the father of thoroughbred writers Bill and Scott Finley, thus pen name.
He created Performance Class Ratings.
Step one count all horses in each race.
Step 2 add second call positions of horse.
Step 3 add finish positions.
Step 4 add second and finish calls.
Step 5 make class adjustments. If todays race is $10k claiming, adjust one two, or three points up or down to total. Example $12k subtract on point, $16k 2 points, if very high quality race subtract 3 points. I use 8 levels for 3 points, $62k claiming, or $32k open allowance.
Step 6 divide final adjusted number by horses faced and I have a PCR rating.
Example--Race 6 Sunday Santa Anita 6.5f turf $50k open claiming
Tiz a Billy 71 horses in his 8 turf races. 14 at second call 27 at final calls.
71/14+27=41.
He had two 2 point lower class races. and six 2 point higher class races. 2x6=12 points minus 2x2=4 points for an 8 point adjustment.
71/14=27=41-8=33
Divide 71 by33 = 215
JohnGalt1 is the poster of here but Im asking if someone can help me with the class part of the system because it is a bit confusing
Thanks to all who help because I would like to use this in the future

I'll second that.
While there may be a component or two that has merit, the system itself is just weak, not to mention very outdated.

I'll give you an easier system
Add the track variant and speed rating of horses last two races together
Example
Speedy Turtle 88-21
74-14
Total = 198
Do this for every horse in race
Rank from highest to lowest
If you are good at math it should take you less than a minute to handicap a ten horse field .
No class ratings needed .
Works best in cheap claiming races at 6 furlongs .
Note any horse with a total of 206 or higher with no other horses over 200 is a lock
Good luck

CM, Since Ted generously loaned you a copy of RDSS software, why not just learn it well and stick with that a while? Most of us have been guilty of A.D.D. at times with our handicapping. I also thought that Sartin's books on Ted's site had some simple component involving class, but may be wrong about that. Both Bris and Equibase(Daily Racing Program) have some type of class ratings already done for you, and I've often seen their top 3 numbers be solid contenders. And I don't mention them so you can go abandon your current method of the day in search of the golden key. Good luck

Thank you.
Please keep advising everyone to avoid this method.
If your criticism is based on his horrible pace figures, than I agree 100% with you. I don't make them. He even wrote they are untrustworthy when comparing route speed to sprint speed and vice versa.
What I do is comprehensive handicapping-- Class, form, and pace/speed. I throw in breeding for first time starters and drop down maidens, and first and second turf runners.
I can not rely on only one facet of handicapping and make a profit.
I'm glad I do what most don't.
We all should do what most don't. If it works.

Check Mark--
I want to add, if you do buy the book to learn about his methods, DO NOT use his method as written as it needs much adjusting to todays racing environment.
For one thing horses don't run every 2-3 weeks anymore, so I have tweaked that part of his form factors.
When I followed his method to the letter, I lost more than I won, and it got worse because racing has changed since the 70's, 80's and 90's, until I made the adjustment for recent racing.
He wrote to use the most recent pace line if it was within 21 days, 28 days with a meaningful workout within 14 days.
I decided to add 7 days. 28 and 35 days I now consider recent races instead of labeling a horse coming off a lay off if not raced in 28 days. His thinking was a horse should earn its keep at least once a month. Obviously owners and trainers don't think the old way anymore. So I shouldn't.
Scot also wrote to almost always use the most recent line, unless off a layoff.
I usually use the recent line unless there is good reason(s) not to.
How I pick pace lines, I borrowed from Michael Pizolla's book "Handicapping magic.
