Peter Miller returns
Quote:
Peter Miller, who announced last fall that he was taking a hiatus from training, has an entry as a trainer for the first time since November in the eighth race at Churchill Downs May 29.
Miller said May 27 that after his upcoming entry at Churchill Downs, he will resume training and racing horses in California, gearing up for the Los Alamitos Race Course summer meet before racing moves to Del Mar. He expects to have about 80 horses.

As a day rate, I'd say that's very low for SoCal - it was that number YEARS ago in some SoCal barns. Here's a 2006 article:
https://www.toconline.com/html/files...cost_win06.pdf
Whether Miller even has all of his horses on day rate is another thing. There's a significant percentage of owners that want their horses trained on a "deal" - they pay no day rate/training fees (they do pay vet fees), and in return the trainer gets a lot larger purse percentage than the typical 10%. What does that lead to? Smaller trainers not being able to make enough to eat during dry spells and dropping out of the game. Other trainers looking to take whatever edge/push whatever envelope they can to get those winners' share of purses.

first of all, only younger horses make it to the track 6 or 7 days a week. some older horses are on the track 4 days a week. that is going to mean that those horses aren't going to need and an exercise rider for the days he doesn't go to the track. he probably won't need a hot walker either. most trainers charge for the days that the horse isn't on the track. any way you cut it, its an expensive game to play and not for everyone including myself.

Peter Miller also known as the trainer who puts in more objections then any other trainer out there. Six months and everything is all hunky dory with the fam again ? I call bulltwinkie....never was a fan and never will be.

Regardless of your and my feelings for Peter Miller (he's more of a wagering situation favorite for me than a fan favorite) - a "sabbatical" of six months' length is not that unusual for the professions that typically do have them.

Hopefully he's doing well and has a smooth transition back.

CHRB Complaint Alleges Miller Continued Training Duties
The California Horse Racing Board lodged complaints May 23 against Peter Miller and Ruben Alvarado, alleging that Miller, while on a hiatus that began late last fall, “engaged in behavior consistent with the duties of a trainer at the San Luis Rey Training Center with horses in the barn of trainer Ruben Alvarado” from Dec. 23–March 24.
The complaints noted a hearing for Miller is scheduled June 20 at Los Alamitos Race Course, and one for Alvarado is planned July 18.
The complaints against Miller and Alvarado claim that Miller’s activities at San Luis Rey Training Center included “entering horses, conducting endoscopy exams, giving instruction to riders, examining horses, assigning jockeys, and creating training charts.” Additionally, the complaints allege that Alvarado did not have a bank account "independent of Miller, which was required per the stewards’ direction.”

Wait, I thought he was taking a "voluntary hiatus"? [insert sarcasm here]
