Used to be a wuss move to go for the stick in a head to head dual down the stretch. There is no pride in horsemanship skills anymore. They just care about styling.

Horsemanship? These are not dressage horses.
These are 1200 to 1400 pound animals that can average a bit over 40 MPH for three quarters of a mile while carrying about 125lbs of person and equipment.
Riders have been using crops for a very long time.
There are rules in place to protect the animals.
New Jersey officials committed an egregious over kill with the new whip rules.
ANd why? I suspect political correctness. Or perhaps the NJRC decided to make a radical move in the hopes that other jurisdictions would follow along.
BTW, hand riding a horse is something about which to be proud. As in the horse was so good today he or she only needed mild urging....

The data does not indicate a reduction in wagering activity, but does indicate a reduction in interest regarding fans wanting to view the live product.

Can’t bring in own food and beverage in 2021. I suspect that is part of the reason for the attendance decline v 2015

Well HISA regulates whip conduct for the entire nation.
6 uses of the whip permitted and no more than 2 consecutive strikes.
Beginning July 1.

The HISA whip rule is OK but I still don't like it. They should allow unlimited underhand whip use but 6 overhand is tolerable. Whip use out of the gate and in the first quarter is mostly defensive to stay straight at the start IMO

Whips (excuse me, crops) are back. So are coolers. Crops and coolers! Plus a new
Tote/video board and new frontside bar/dining Clubhouse side. Here’s hoping for a good meet.

Now to the really important question.
Can I still get a Max’s hotdog out back on Haskell day?
It has been two years and I’m getting the withdrawal shakes.

I think so. I haven’t heard of any changes other than Local Smoke BBQ taking a Grandstand concession stand and being available for picnic area parties, and the new Clubhouse trackside dining space.

I'd recommend just getting one in Long Branch then eating it while watching the waves. The ocean is therapeutic. You can get back to the six-horse fields with a 3-5 favorite a little later.

Except Monmouth went a lot further regarding penalties as compared to HISA, for example jockeys can be banned for the remainder of the meet after a third offense.

But say this for Monmouth: They still allow Lasix in most stakes races.
Horseshoe Indianapolis (formerly Indiana Grand, and before that, Indiana Downs) also allows Lasix in stakes races.
The Maryland Jockey Club allows Lasix in stakes races with purses of $100,000 and $125,000 - but not in races in which the purse is higher.

I will be giving them a shot again this year after re-instating crops and coolers. I was going to drive out to Belmont this spring, but with no coolers permitted, Monmouth will get my money instead.
Racing keeps trying to keep the regular fan home.
