Of course since you lived in SoCal you know where Woodland Hills is. I have a feeling unless the coyote was in the process of attacking the child killing it would land you in hot water. Even if you shot it while attacking they would probably nail you for discharging a firearm in the city limits and too close to a dwelling. You are supposed to call animal control.
I lived outside of the city of Riverside a couple miles NE of the 60/15 interchange against some foothills. Had a good few rattlesnake encounters on the property, since it was illegal to kill them I used a shovel and or hoe, no guns.
