Pace numbers were solid in the Louisiana Derby, but Lone Sailor has re-emphasized that he likely hung very badly in that race.

original notes on that race were:
4th start G2 Louisiana Derby 9f - Weak field for a final prep. Inconsequential brush of gate and #3 at the break. First-time-blinkers and was really moving into the first turn. Was a little fortunate that a longshot went even harder and crossed over, preventing a run-off pace meltdown situation. Breather on the backstretch, was tackled in the lane by one long shot rival, and had another rival sweeping with a wide bid, but both rivals hung in deep stretch, and his sustained effort was enough to come back late and get the win.

Was clear that he wasn't a Derby contender.

I'm not a fan of Lone Sailor and wouldn't say that Noble Indy ranked among the top few contenders in the Derby, but the LA Derby was loaded with speed, the pace was fast, and the race collapsed. Whether coming again was an illusion or gameness doesn't really matter much. He ran a very big race that day.

A lot of Pletcher 3yos seem to peak too early and either fall apart in the Derby or soon after. That's what happened to Noble Indy. What he is doing now has absolutely nothing to do with his form in the LA Derby. They are 2 different horses.

Judging by his last three finishes, NI has already retired.
Justify has done more in his stall than NI has!
