Glad you brought this up,I was going to post on Hernandez's ride after the race.........and I forgot......geez.
Hernandez took a lot of heat for his ride, but there was much more going on than meets the eye.
Who was the dude on this board who used to talk about the wind quite a bit ?
The Sunland Derby was perfect for him.
At some point between the Oaks and the Derby the headwind going in to the race flow on the backstretch increased considerably.
When jockey Hernandez straightened up with Anothertwistafate soon after the first turn,it appears he wisely picked up on the strong headwind.
He then positioned ATOF in a horse pocket(if you will)and used the other horses as a wind shield.......it was a really smart move on his part.
Next he swings ATOF out as they turn for home, and has clear sailing the length of the stretch to pass the Pletcher runner..........ATOF just couldn't finish the deal.
Hernandez actually rode the race perfectly.......it's too bad he didn't get to keep the mount.
Perhaps if ATOF gets in the Derby.........and Castellano takes off,Hernandez will get the mount back.
He deserves his shot.

I agree. I enjoyed his posts. He had a different take on things.

There was a guy who used to post about horses with long necks and jockeys colors being bumblebee or something. I never knew what he was talking about. Way out there. It may have been the old DRF forum I can't remember.

It was a "swan neck". I finally found out what he meant. If a horse is cantering with his chin tucked in, he is in form.

And the bumblebee thing?

He meant the silks:

I think my copy of Barry Meadows new book shipped without the stats for the Bumblebee factor. I'll contact them, thanks!

And exercise riders know if you don't give any rein, the horse will do that. It's kinda hard to keep your head straight if your rider isn't giving you any slack.
This is the way they do it for "photographs" cuz bettors like to see that. I don't agree that it's a valid handicapping method.

Who said anything about it being valid?

Seems like the record of someone who deserves to be in the Derby. Hopefully the connections of the Japanese horse will come to their senses. Why get embarrassed when you don't have to?

He's got his Preakness gate secured. If he can't beat Owendale or Cutting Humor then he shouldn't be in the Derby.
