Great interview and good questions by Jonathon.
I think part of that BC Sprint speed figure controversy for Elite Power is that Thorograph has had him much faster than either Beyer or TimeformUS all year. Jerry had him running faster than a minus 5 (which is really fast) multiple times going into the race. But part of that is ground loss. Elite Power has a tendency to make 3-4 wide outside moves. When you normalize things for ground loss, the figures are a little closer. Maybe TG has him a bit quicker, but within the range you might typically see when you are obsessed with looking at various sources like me.
I didn't see Ragozin, but we know he almost never breaks races out for track speed changes.
In non figure terms, he's obviously a very good sprinter. But if you look at that field it was hardly filled with super consistent Grade 1 accomplished sprinters. Nakatomi looked Grade 3ish overall, Speed Boat Beach is a great prospect but looked Grade 2ish coming in, The Chosen Vron loves to win, but he's done most of his damage against CA Breds. His Grade 1 win in the Crosby was in a race that was loaded with speed and fell apart.
Anyway, point being, I think the Beyer and TimeformUS figures make perfect sense based on the quality of the horses and the differences may not be as large as they look.
