Presque Isle and Golden Gate aren't exactly racing "better horses". Their Tapeta breakdown statistics are simply better than equivalent dirt tracks. Compare Presque Isle's numbers to Parx and Penn National, e.g. If we're still watching this sport and wagering on it, we accept at some level that there are going to be breakdowns. However, there's no way around the fact that current synthetic surfaces have a statistically significant advantage on breakdown numbers. How you choose to act on that appears to differ significantly across this board.
