Presque Isle commentator

I'm having a discussion with a friend about Ron Mullis and his Southern accent.
Question: is it genuine?

Katie Mekolay always looks mildly annoyed with him, the chemistry with the tall guy from Hawthorne seems a lot more positive.

Sounds more "slow" than Southern to me.

off topic - who is the new blonde at HOO? The pix isn't great but from what I could make out pretty darn cute.

I'd have to say I agree with the "slow" part of it. Used to be a Jocks agent in Ky & Ohio.

I guess we'll never recover from the Beulah twins. The PID commentator may be cute, but she is pretty clueless when it comes to horse racing.

At The Races used to have bobble heads of the Beulah twins on the presenter's desk when Stateside was on.

as someone who plays fair grounds, damn near daily when it's up, i have watched her for about 5 months this last year, and she is not clueless.

I think women in general, especially ones that are somewhat easy on the eyes, get sterotyped as being stupid when it comes to handicapping. it's like if you aren't 55 years old with gray hair and 2 racing forums sticking out your back pocket than i can't believe anything you say.

I mean, lol, what the hell do you want her to do, put your ticket together for you lol? is she supposed to explain the finer points of superfecta wagering/ticket structure in the 3-4 minutes she's on air between races lol?

it's really a trick question becuase if she actually did this, she would not be catering to the people she is supposed to be catering to. She is there for people like my mother, who go to the track 1-3 times a year, who don't handicap but want to make wagers and hopefully make some money. you have to keep it simple or as simple as possible for them but at the same time provide you with information.

her job is simply to get on air, make a few comments about a few horse es that she likes for people who are coming to the track and don't know why they are going to play, maybe tell me something i don't know about how the track is playing, remind me of anything I've missed like a jockey has won x races today or the track has switched from firmto yielding, basically to get me set to wager this upcoming race, and she does that perfectly fine.

I also play socal religiously. Kurt Hoover, might very well be the worst paddock guy in america. I actually don't mind him on HRTV and yes he's a "real handicapper" so to speak but he doesn't use this skills when he's in the paddock doing w hat he does at hollywood park. he doesn't give you anything about any horse, hell half the time he doesn't even bother showing up before the next race. you might catch him 5 out of 8 races and if you catch him in the 8th race it's just to tell you to come back tomorrow. You would be lucky to get a "boy i really like this horse at a price off that last race" out of him about 1 horse, that's about all you will get. yet you don't see one post about how he is clueless or anything of the nature, hell he provides substationally less info than katie or jessica or any other female or male for that matter while doing that particular job.

and Terry Wallace, lol don't get me . between playing with his bobbleheads and trying to find the camera he might have time to talk about one horse before the post parade.

Katie is not clueless when it comes to horse racing. She's an ok handicapper. I guess Ron is ok also. He calls the races too - I actually think he's a better race caller than handicapper.

I have those bobble heads. Twin Spires sent them to me a few years ago and I still have no clue why. I didn't ask for them. They also sent me a nice pair of binoculars which came in handy on a recent trip to Alaska.

I don't think any of the cute girl commentators were hired because the know anything about picking horses. The only time I ever listen to one is when they are talking about physical appearance of a horse. There is some sort of chance that they might have been around show horses since they were young and actually know what they are talking about when it comes to that. As an internet bettor, I don't get a good look at the horses, but I think I can read the racing form as well as any 20 something, male or female.

I was thinking the exact same thing - other than changes the only time I have the volume up is when someone is commenting on how the horses look in the paddock/on track. I am all for the cute women but what I would really like is some 'pro' describing how the horses are looking and acting pre-race. That's the one big short coming of being an internet bettor, we're almost blind pre-race.

Rachel McLaughlin is the new commentator at Hoosier.
I watched their races last night...
Nice full fields with nice payoffs...will definitely be playing again.
