More than any state but maybe New Mexico, horse racing should be halted in Louisiana because the purse structure is causing a lot of people that can't afford horse aftercare to own horses. As long as any track in that state is running races besides FG, you're looking at owners trying to squeeze every last penny out of them before they get on a truck to Mexico

Their state-bred program is a major contributor to the horse dumping problem there. A comprehensive overhaul is long overdue.

Agreed, they breed an extraordinary amount of horses that should never be bred. They offer nothing to the breed and just serve to fill low level claiming races

And throw in the breakage money...as well as the money from the uncashed winning mutuel tickets. No one needs that money more than these poor horses. They win today's humongous purses for their connections...and all THEY get in return is a bail of hay, and a truck-ride to Mexico when their careers are over.

Not to get off-topic here, but remember IMPERATIVE? A 9-year-old gelding with 47 career starts and couple of G1 wins, he was entered in a $32,000 claiming race at Churchill tomorrow but was scratched to enter a $24,000 allowance race at Thistledown next Monday instead. His career earnings are $3,262,805.

I'd say the horse deserves a nice retirement at this point, but that's just me.

Horses are competitive beasts bred to run. Whose to say that Imperative isn’t happier staying in training and competing vs. being turned out to pasture somewhere? Also, isn’t this Looch’s horse? I doubt he is keeping the horse around running for his $10k share of the purse if the horse wins that race...

I’ve seen several 9,10,11 year olds that have zero shot a winning running at smaller tracks around the country but without being in the stalls with them day in and day out how should we know whether or not they need to be retired?

Well, it's Looch's horse and not mine. He can do whatever he wishes. I did just see where he said that if Imperative doesn't do well on Monday then he will retire him.
