Star in the Making?

Rafael Hernandez, 7 time Fairmount Park leading rider, has been riding for Wesley Ward on a regular basis. Last night at Retama Hernandez won both 100,000 stake races, on the turf no less. One was for Ward, the other for Maker. Both were heavy favorites and won easily. Hopefully Pletcher and some other big time trainers will see his potential and he will get a chance to become one of the best jocks in the country.

Last night was easy money with him on obvious winners. One thing about Hernandez is I never see him blow a race on a standout. And I have been watching him for years at Fairmount. The bad news for me is that the easy money at Fairmount is over since I guess he will never set foot at Fairmount again. I could always count on 4-8 mortal locks a week with him. Put 200 to win and take your 100 or so profit each time. I basically had 400-500 a week to play with since my win % betting him to win was almost 95% on these sure locks.

Good luck buddy, my favorite jock.

Hernandez was to ride at Oaklawn during the last meeting. Had Harry Hacek representing him. A day or two into the meet he bailed. I don't know the reasons for his departure, but it had the smell of something that reflected poorly on his attitude.

Gives me pause when considering his prospects for doing anything other than being a big fish in small ponds.

Another Fairmount veteran here, though I long ago shifted attention to bigger pools when playing Chicago, and later other tracks, became possible in the late '80's.

Hernandez can't be more dominant than "The General", Dave Gall, who often stated that he won with the best horse, or finished 6th with the 6th best horse, etc.

Even 1-9 shots win "only" 70+% of the time. Some here may question your 95% hit rate.

That was a typo mistake. My bad. The win % was 75% and it was only on horses that were even money or less. Just remember, Hernandez won at over a 60% clip on favorites that were even money or less. And I didn't bet on all of them. In fact I probably only bet on half of them. I on occasion actually made a couple bets against him when he was on a huge favorite that looked very vulnerable.
