The very first hockey game I went to was in 1962 or 63. I was a kid. It was between Christmas and New Year's and all the Catholic schools were off. The Rangers and Knicks actually played games
during the day during this holiday week!
Well, somehow we got tickets to see the Rangers at the Garden. The Black Hawks were great then with Hull and Mikita and many other future legends; the Rangers were not, but improving with our own stars such as Andy Bathgate, Rod Gilbert, Vic Hadfield and a few others.
Glenn Hall vs. Gump Worsley in goal. I remember both played outstanding in goal that day.
Stan Mikita scored a goal, and I believe, so did the late Pierre Pilote, who wasn't known for scoring being one the NHL's all-time great defensemen.
Don Marshall scored for the Rangers and
we lost 2-1.
Despite this heartbreak, I became a huge Stan Mikita fan and the Black Hawks became my second favorite team. I remember it as well as the very first baseball game I attended.
RIP to an NHL legend and Hall of Famer,
Stan Mikita.
