Excel ?

I have a column in Excel that contains the date 03/24/18
...going back years.

I want to be able to filter dates by month so I can look at race for say 3yos in Jan-March only. Any way to get the month name or number out of that field?

try looking under more formats, or custom formats.

I am not sure what version of Excel you have but you should be able to filter by month. Click a cell inside your data set. Go to Home I think? Look for the button in the ribbon. Filter or Sort/Filter. Click Filter. You should get arrows in the top row of your data. I think there's an option for date filters.

Insert a blank column next to your Date column. Assuming your first date is in cell A4, in the blank column, enter the formula: =TEXT(A4,"MMDD") Copy this formula down to the bottom of your data. Sort your data on this column.
