You might go with smart-phones in general but when people talk of racing reaching out to a younger audience, racing apps in any iteration for smartphones are close to non-existent. I think the DRF provides some content for the iphone and Blackberry but not much.

Dave, thinking about taking up a new programming language?
Remember, IPhone apps will run on the iPad also

This seems as good a time as any for a first post...
iPhone here.
By the way, if you have any interest in Australian racing, there is a free iPhone app called AUS Racing that gives you programs/results/and free live video of Australian racing, and the quality is quite good.

Best Horse Racing Apps on iPhone
North America:
Equibase Yearbook
DRF Ticketmaker
Breeders Cup
Twitter (lots of good people to follow)
BettingSlips (it's a app to figure out the cost of any wager)
iDerby (racing game...pretty fun but repetitive)
Horse Racing 3D (a little to easy to figure out but fun for a little while)
Europe:
Racing Post (great way to get European news)
Racing UK
Xpressbet has a pretty good smartphone betting site that is customized for smartphones. It's not an app you just access from your browser.
Agreed that we need more......IPad should be a great format for the horseplayer to be paperless at the track if the right apps were developed.
I use a Next Gen Kindle to view PDF DRF files at the track but the functionality is not great.
I would never use it if I had not poured over the data before I arrived.

Actually, my marketing guys asked me to post this.
I doubt that I (personally) will write such an app but I might design one. (Let's leave that for another thread.)

NTRA has (had?) a podcast with graded stakes replays which is handy.
Safari is useful if you want to offer something on iPhone. It has supported AJAX since the start.

I love my iPhone!
No racing apps, but do use it to go to this website and view entries/results on Equibase.
