Depending on field size and how well I know the contestants I usually shoot for 15 minutes or less. There are several reasons for this . I almost absolutely agree with what we are taught in school . Stick to your first instincts and don’t budge. When taking a test. This protects you from second guessing and over thinking. Also, I try to project the pace and go with my gut evaluation. This protects you from changing your mind and second guessing . If I’m that unsure it can become a pass or I lower my handle on that race . And since I’ve been doing this for a while ….. there’s nothing worse then that mistake and seeing your original thought crush your psyche when your original thoughts win and you had changed your mind. It’s disheartening and deflating on your ego and mood. Then you lose confidence and organization . This can really put you in a funk if that pattern continues on for the rest of the day. It’s a real good way to lose confidence and begin to mentally unravel for a while. It’s easier to go with my original thoughts then change something and see my first idea be the better choice after the fact.
I sort of see this as a common mistake that people make and I try my best to be immune to it. If you’ve been doing poorly already , it’s reaching and you can really slump and lose your cool. Bad discipline and a habit to avoid IMO. If you see something that first pass thru stay with it. Try to trust what your mind tells you first.
