Jockey Sonny Leon

Hey gang, is Leon "known" for anything? You know, like, popping the gate, deep closers, yada, yada, yada? Trying to get a little more involved in FLA racing. Thanks in advance.

BTW, race caller at GP is as good as I've heard. I like him a lot.

I didn't answer this question when first posted because I'm not much of a jockey-capper, but since no one else has weighed in, I'll give it a go.

I always thought of him as a nondescript, run-of-the-mill Ohio jockey. So I guess to me the answer is; No, he's not known for anything, besides winning the Kentucky Derby. He certainly wasn't dominant at Belterra Park.

Having watched a small number of Gulfstream races, I will say he's riding like he's eager to prove he belongs there, and he seems to be getting better mounts lately.

My loosely assembled data indicates it is uncommon for him to be involved in troubled trips.

The only thing I know about him is riding Rich Strike. I don't know if it’s Rich Strike or his trainer but based on those races the horse is too off the lead pack for me to put a win bet on. But my gut(and I realize thats not a reliable betting angle) tells me the trainer is who I would have questions about. I always feel with jockeys its the really bad ones you have to stay away from. I do not believe Leon is a jockey you need to shy away from based on his riding of RS.
