One strategy I kind of like is the double exacta box superfecta.
Say you have 4 contenders where the top 2 are a little better than the other 2. Instead of boxing them all, you can play it like this.
A1 A2 B1 B2
A2 A1 B1 B2
A1 A2 B2 B1
A2 A1 B2 B1
That way you are giving yourself a fairly tight ticket that matches your opinion better than boxing them, but you are still giving yourself a few ways to hit it.
