Please No..Not That!!
Several members of my crew out sick, which raises the terrifying possibility of me filling in as clerk of scales. My ancient experience on that difficult job make me 4th (or so) in succession-sort of like some disastrous chain of events resulting in the house speaker becoming potus.
Aside from shouldering numerous duties as things inevitably get hectic during the races, the clerk works under intense (and often hostile) scrutiny at a job incorporating more unwritten rules and policies than a 1940's game of baseball. And, as might be expected, local riders feel no deep or abiding love for yours truly.
I would rather walk naked through Central Park. During January. Brandishing a fistful of c-notes.

Can you give an explanation to the people out of the loop? I would think that is a straight forward job.

Maybe it was the era, but I never had to give a pee sample because of an athletic competition, even though steroids were being used in their infancy.
I don't believe anything I see on TV, do they really have to watch the guy pee? I don't care how much that job paid, no thanks.

I think Tom means the guys who hold the stick with a cup on the end hilding it under the horses pecker until he pees. Not testing humans. That being said, you can decide which job is worse.

I had a co-worker who said when he was younger he worked on a dairy farm
artificially inseminating cows. He said he had to put a gloved hand up there.
It that isn't gross I don't know what is.

I was at FL back in the 70s, and a friend of mine came up to me. He introduced the with and said hello and shook hands.
The he says,"....and he works here, he collects the pee sample from the horses."
At which time I headed full speed to thw Men's room to wash my hands.

At least he wasn't manually collecting semen samples.

I once took a summer class for students interested in vet medicine. During the session at a horse farm, we had to rectally palpate mares.

I got kicked by my girlfriend's sister's horse, changing a bandage, I was not holding his leg properly, I learned for the next time. Those skinny looking legs are strong as hell. How do you get away with doing something to a back end of a horse it doesn't like without making you it's enemy? That mentioned horse hated men, I had to watch him like a hawk, he was young, I figure a man may have abused him. I was never more than nice to him, but he definitely wanted a piece of me.

The entire equine species is one huge bundle of contradiction. Half a ton of muscle propelled by stick legs. Supposedly not smart, but they'll make a fool of you in an instant. Strong enough to kick a lion's head off, but they let humans sit on them with all these straps attached. Simple herd animals who run in the same direction, while generating billions of dollars and giving people the entire spectrum of emotions in a span of 2.5 minutes.
Go figure.
