It was the late 70's when I first came around the Press Box at Santa Anita. Julio had a couple horses. He'd make ends meet by selling carrots out of the trunk of his car and doing race results in Spanish. Even then he was brilliant at pointing a horse to a particular race and getting a huge effort. They weren't Stakes but to him they were as he NEEDED to cash bets to pay the bills.
One day he had a horse in at Santa Anita that he went completely ALL IN on. Bet his entire bankroll. Horse gets into a TON of trouble. Stopped multiple times and finishes a flying 3rd beaten a neck for it all.
Joe Steiner had the bug then and although I love Joe to this day he put a REALLY bad ride on that horse.
I will NEVER forget Julio racing back and forth in the press box. SCREAMING at the top of his lungs.
" JOEY, LITTLE JOEY WHAT HE THINKING. HE GOT A TUMOR IN HE HEAD. A TUMOR!! OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT LITTLE JOEY. YOU SEE THAT? IT'S A TUMOR. LITTLE JOEY HE GOT A TUMOR IN HEES HEAD!
