Two Year Olds Really Do Improve Leaps and Bounds
Breeders' Cup response to the souped up track at Keeneland on BC weekend:
The fast times are reflective of the best horses in the world competing.
OK. Well, Nashville didn't participate in the Breeder's Cup, he ran on the undercard. Gamine was coming off a loss--and a drug positive. Knicks Go had been running in allowance races and his time for a flat mile was nearly a full second faster than the mile fraction in his track record 8.5f allowance win 4 weeks earlier on the same "consistent" surface.
Meanwhile, their botched timing of the BC Classic aside, apparently non-Triple Crown winner Authentic is what, like a second-and-a-half faster than a Triple Crown winner who romped in 2015 in a perfect setup?
Oh, and speaking of the Triple Crown apparently you can pencil in Essential Quality as the next horse to turn the trick since he improved nearly TWO-and-a-half seconds winning the BC Juvenile in 1:42 after winning the Lane's End Futurity over the same course and distance 4 weeks earlier in 1:44 and change. If he improves more over the winter he should be setting track records in his workouts.
To be fair, some of my reasoning is just as disingenuous as the Breeders' Cup's official position.
There's no way they can admit that the track was sped up since they had a catastrophic injury on BC Saturday, but they don't have to treat the fans like they are totally ignorant.
And to be honest, if those were the "best horses in the world", this sport is in worse shape than we thought...
