I toured Alcatraz and they let you go into the solitary rooms and close the door (no lock on the door thankfully). I couldn't imagine doing it for 30 days. I also spent some time at the WIPP site in New Mexico. WIPP (Waste Isolation Pilot Project) is where transuranic (or low level) waste from nuclear weapons facilities is stored. You take an elevator to the actual storage area half a mile underground. At one point the guy who works at the site asks if you want to see what it is like in the elevator with the light off. I thought this place was way creepier than Alcatraz.
