I'd have to agree that it has done little for the sport.
However, at least it got the 37 year old monkey gone.
Year after year, that was becoming too much to bear.
Along with the growing implication that the breed was being destroyed.
It's worth a lot to the sport to have wiped that slate clean.

The mystique of the triple crown in the 1970's isn't seen today. Horse racing was Americana, as was baseball & boxing. IMO, boxing is dead, & horse racing is getting there, even if we have 5 triple crown winners on a row, just seems times have changed.
Baseball isn't what it once was either, but I'm glad we got to wee a triple crown winner last year, & we will see another one this year.

Songbird is on the shelf, she won't be racing till summer. She hasn't worked in a month.

I've been arguing since last year that Nyquist was a lot better than most speed handicappers thought.
Now I'm going to argue that the gap between him and the others is not large enough to make a Triple Crown very very likely even if he stays sharp, gets good trips, and can handle 12F. And we know that staying sharp, getting all good trips, and being versatile enough to wire a 5F race and win a 12F race is not assured either.

In 2012 rumor has it drug O'Neill's life was made miserable in NY. I'll have anothers friend (his dog) was not allowed near him and some other backstretch talk.
If Nyquill wins the Preakness , I wonder if drug O'Neill will get the same treatment again. My money would say it won't happen again as the streak has been broken. But interesting to follow.

Nyquist winning the Derby leads to the potential to make some money. In the Preakness pound Nyquist w/ Exaggerator ice cold exacta, which might be like a $15 exacta, but if you have 100 on it then it will pay 750 and i really cant see any other outcome. Then bet against Nyquist in the Belmont... cha ching

Looked to me that Nyquist re-fired at the 1/16th pole. Exaggerator was gaining steadily, and then there was about 50 yards where the margin seemed to stay the same. It signals to me that he may be able to get the 1 1/2 miles next month. He was able to do that after 1:35 and change.
I thought it was a pretty good run by him. It wouldn't surprise me if he were able to pull the TC off. It also wouldn't surprise me if he went into Baltimore a little tired. I might be looking to beat him there.

Honestly I really don't know but I wonder, did f.e. Secretariat beat much stronger fields than American Pharoah or Nyquist?

Can't really say...those who know far more than I could tell you. I can only recall what I've read noted many times, and that is, "Sham was a fine racehorse, one who just happened to be born in the wrong year."

From all the triple crown attempts, AP, & Silver Charm had the toughest opponents IMO since the late 1990's. Last year AP had tough opponents, & the opponents were from Cali.
Cali horses are dominant, & I thought that would stop this year, but it didn't. Baffert & the Cali trainers are becoming a cartel in their own right, they control the road as of now.

Sham was overrated, and the Forego who ran in the Derby was not the Forego of later on.
But Secretariat beat a ton of good horses later in the year.
