Moribund California tracks cutting purses

Santa Anita cutting them a little:

Golden Gate cutting them a lot:

If you've never come out to California to see a horse race and always wanted to, I recommend you do it soon. Because we're going away....

I hate watching CA racing go down the tubes because imo places like SA and DMR should be among the survivors. But this puts even more pressure on trainers and owners of high quality stock to look at places where large amounts of casino money go to purses and make CA racing uncompetitive both in terms of costs and earnings power. Right now the purses at OP are HUGE!

I am interested to see what happens to racing with no west coast (heck western USA) presence. I dont think its going to be a great thing for racing as I have heard to see this contraction in venues and races. Racing needs more presence, not less.

No one wants the highest purse Thoroughbred race west of Arkansas to be the Sunland Park derby

Well I hope it's not going away. One of the great things about horse racing today is the access to content all across the country, and all over the world. I remember in the old days you were lucky to get one simulcast race all day. Today you can follow horse racing all over the world practically 24 -7.

You have Fox, fanduel, rtn, internet content. The form online, podcasts. Its a great sport to follow
I sure hope they come up wirh a business model that will lead to success.

Contraction would just show where this sport is going in the USA. Its in a bad place.
