The obvious goal of the west is to bring as many countries under the US political umbrella and into NATO as they can so they can surround Russia militarily, weaken Putin politically, and ultimately get rid of him. All techniques are on the table including using the CIA to help overthrow regimes loyal to him, fighting surrogate wars against Russia in Ukraine and elsewhere all to hopefully weaken him etc..
The obvious goal of Russia and Putin is self defense, maintaining his regime, and enriching himself and the oligarchs that have supported him. To do that, he has to retain political influence in the countries around his border that are strategic military or energy locations. He needs that buffer between Russia and NATO and also markets to do business to sell his oil and natural resources.
This is not so complicated if the media would just stop lying and everyone else would stop being so gullible. This is a VERY easy to end war, but not when the ultimate real goal is to get rid of Putin.
The short version is that Putin is a very bad guy, but the west is FOS and provoked all this by first meddling in Ukrainian politics and second by being unwilling to accept the reasonable position that one of our political opponents finds enemy weapons and troops on his border to be unacceptable. In the end, everyone is going to be loser economically, MANY lives will be lost, there will be needless destruction, and Russia is going to be driven into the arms of China. That’s the best case.
