Taxation of Miles Driven
Using the left's argument that voter ID laws are racist because Blacks don't have driver's licenses the same way that whites do, it would then seem that this tax would be racist because it targets those with licenses (whites) even though everyone benefits from the infrastructure in our country.
At the very least, using the left's "disparate impact" theory to blame happenstance on racism, more whites would be paying this tax so therefore, it must be racist.

The current gasoline tax is actually a tax geared to the lower income groups. Those who have to drive an older gasoline vehicle just to get to work are paying much more road tax for fuel than those driving subsidized electric cars.

The bureaucracy that would need to manage this would eat up any tax money generated. Just think IRS for your car. How are they going to prove how many miles you drove? Take a picture each month of your odometer? But you have to date verify that. Take a picture of the odometer with today's newspaper? Send out an odometer reader to everyone's house? I can see it coming. They will force auto manufacturers to build in electronic odometer reading software and force them to send it to the government. It will still take a huge number of bureaucrats to manage that.
How many thousands of bureaucrats will they need to do all of this verification?
People that propose these kinds of bullshit ideas never think about the practicality of it in real life. They only look at generating more money for their progressive wish list.
Just one example of tax lunacy was the 10% luxury tax in the early 1990's on yachts & private airplanes above $100,000 cost. Catalina Yachts lost 40% in sales and had to lay off 350 people. The government lost more money than they ever collected in revenues. At least in that case they wised up pretty quickly and repealed after about a year or so.
In addition to causing a huge bloat in government workers, this would be a very intrusive tax. Why should the government know how many miles you have driven? It should be none of their business. It's like the difference between the income tax and sales taxes. When you pay a sales tax the government doesn't know what you bought, you can pay the price in cash so it is anonymous. With income taxes the government has to know every minute detail about your work, your income, your investments, etc. And have a huge bureaucracy to collect and analyze all of that.

We were just talking about this at work. A guy stated that you would get a box that was a GPS monitor for your vehicle. It would record everything. Whether this is true or not?

And...if you fail to get it installed at your own expense, you won't be able to get your tags or license renewed.

I commute 200 miles a day. This might sting a little.

Unfortunately it would be fairly easy to implement. Yearly vehicle inspection information is currently held in a state database, it probably already includes mileage but if not it would be simple to add. The feds could task the states with running this shit show or tell them to fork over the data.
That inspection sticker on your windshield isn’t really necessary anymore. Cops don’t have to be on the lookout for overdue inspections now, it’s all automated when they are driving. Cameras on their cars are constantly scanning license plates and running them for violations including overdue inspections. An alert is given when a violation is found. Collecting “mileage tax” at the time of inspection could become part of the inspection.

Not that difficult. The same mechanism that tests for smog/safety could verify mileage and those numbers would be a line item on state/federal tax forms.

This sounds like a perfect fit for an electric vehicle. You should consider it.

Here in Florida, we're light years ahead of blue states. We ain't got no stinkin' inspections, which is just another form of taxation. And I'd bet DeSantis wouldn't institute that system either.

The county where I live doesn't have any smog or other vehicle inspections.
