Monmouth Park

Why aren't they opening on Derby Day?

I haven't been there since 2010,so I haven't kept up.

In 1980,I was going every Monday and doing fairly well.

derby day

Hey all. new user.
Noticed the Monmouth thread. I was also disappointed there's not live racing on derby day. would have made it a lot of fun.
Anyway...what is Monmouth park like on Derby Day without live racing? Good fun scene? my friend and I who do Saratoga together every year are looking to just be somewhere not in the house this weekend for Derby. Seems the weather is going to be nice.
Let me know for those who've gone. Thanks!

They have tried different opening days every couple of years.

My guess would be they get a good on track crowd without having to give out any purse money. Also by moving opening day out a week the focus is on them and avoid Derby and Preakness.

Cant wait!!

Meadowlands has a hat contest & derby buffet if you're interested in those things.

Thumbs down Monmouth without racing on Derby day was awful...

In case anyone is following for next year...Monmouth on Derby day without live racing was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL. Never again. No one there other than people watching NBA in the "sports book" aka glorified hallway with big screens. The upstairs bar was OK but a pathetic scene. And the absolute kicker, just unbelievably bad....they had security checking coolers and no beer was allowed to be brought in since there's no staff to enforce liquor codes...unreal really. Just so so so bad. Made me almost not want to come back this summer for live racing. OH, and there were zero DRFs to be bought. zero. My buddy and I often say "racing hates its fans" and this was ground zero for this sentiment.

Not sure about the rest of this rant, but I can tell you there were so many DRFs, they had about 100 left over when the day was done...unsold...

Really?

Lots of industry folks read this website, even if they don't participate. This includes people from DRF and Monmouth Park.

You figure out the rest.

I guess I have to spell this out...

Someone from DRF wrote to me to tell me they contacted Monmouth...Monmouth told DRF they had plenty of DRFs that day...in fact, more then enough.

As I said, plenty of industry insiders read this board, even if they don't participate.
