The horses halted to a standstill...and this announcer still had no idea that something was wrong.

The far outside thuuurd

The paddock turn the first tam

As they come by the stands tha first tam

Down the backstretch

Threeeee Quarters 132 and fooah

Rouuuuund the faaaah turn

They're heads apart

Not the greatest single race call but I wanted to recognize Mr. Predictable but lovable, Bullet Bob Meyer.

I'll never forget those Fri/Sat shows on TV (Hint Hint NYRA ) and calling 976-7676 or something like that to get stretch calls when I was 12 and an aspiring adult

Bob "The Bullet" Meyer......Yeah, that was Stan Bergstein's pet name for Meyer who called the races at Yonkers seemingly forever. Meyer was also a statistician for home Rangers games when the Blue Shirts were broadcast on WNBC 660- AM....Then radio play by play voice of the Rangers, Marv Albert always mentioned Meyer in the post game sign off credits.
Oh you left out ".... up-on the rim fawth".....
There are were two other race callers who patterned their own styles after Meyer. John Bothe, who took over at Meadowlands after Tom Durkin was hired by NYRA and a guy by the name of Howard Oil who has/had the job at Monticello....And odd sort, Oil used to be found inside of the Roosevelt and Yonkers grandstands calling the upcoming race before it happened. It was his way of spreading the word how he handicapped the upcoming race. He sounded like a Bob Meyer clone. Like I said, an odd guy to say the least. Guys would actually gather around Oil as he rolled through the race as he predicted. The people would start cheering as though they were through Oil's eyes watching an actual race. At the end when Oil belted out his final of the call, guys would either cheer or boo. My guess this was based on their own picks for the next race.
here at least one little blip about Oil....

I saw your webpage via the USTA website, it brought back some great memories, especially how they would be open on Thanksgiving night. I noticed that you remembered the red haired guy that called the races on the first floor. You may want to add that the redhead is actually Howard Oil who is now the track announcer at Monticello Raceway! Courtesy angelfire.com

Then there was the stretch calls from all the NY area tracks on WCBS News 880 NYC.
Meyer would lead in with "and here's how the official call sounded from the top of the stretch".
We wore out 212 976 7676....Until the parental units saw the phone bill. Remember "long distance" charges. Yeah. Those calls were like 75 cents per....Dad was not pleased.

Jim Hannon... saw him a few years ago at Suffolk Downs working a window. Still active in his late '80's.
