I was once told by a then-retired DRF trackman that when they described a horse's effort as 'evenly' or 'even effort' it was really code... code being that in their opinion the horse was held or stiffed but couldn't say as much, obviously. 'No mishap' was another term used by those old-time DRF trackmen when they suspected larceny.

Never heard this. If true, then 500 horses a week were stiffed.

He also had The Professional Method which was a course he taught , that was from 1980.
