Breeders' Cup Bans Raceday Meds

Article here: http://www.breederscup.com/content.aspx?id=46333

I'm nowhere near educated enough to guess how this may affect American horses. Anyone informed enough to provide some insight?

Just another in a long line of dumb moves by the Breeders Cup. I'm all for getting rid of medications eventually (gradually), but now our "championship day" will consist of handicapping which horses need drugs and which don't instead of which horses are best.

Oh goody goody...let's run them all on poly, too while we're at it.
At least then we can throw out ALL the dirt horses.

How about banning it in all graded stakes races effective 8/1/11 - then at least we get to see some evidence ahead of time.

Did anyone tell the morons on the BC committee that people bet these races?

Maybe we should boycott the BC this year.
I'm in for it.

Bet trainers who know what they are doing.
Maybe throw out anyone with a win% over 20 would be a good idea.

Very encouraging to see that at least some people are thinking long term.

As I understand it they are eliminating all race day meds from 2 yo races only. Did I miss anything here?

As an initial step, the Breeders’ Cup board directed that procedures be developed that would result in the prohibition of the administration of race day medication in two year-old races in the 2012 Championships. The next step would be the implementation of a new policy for all Championship races in the 2013 event and subsequent events.

From the BC's actual press release:
The measure, adopted at today’s Board of Directors meeting, would be directed at prohibiting the race day administration of any medication to horses competing in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. It was strongly supported by the Breeders’ Cup Members during their annual meeting on July 13. As an initial step, the Breeders’ Cup board directed that procedures be developed that would result in the prohibition of the administration of race day medication in two year-old races in the 2012 Championships. The next step would be the implementation of a new policy for all Championship races in the 2013 event and subsequent events.

Two-year-olds next year; all races by 2013. That's the way I read it.

The event hasn't improved one iota with its recent panderings to the forces of globalization. I liked it better (read: more willing to bet more) when more regions of the US were pitted against one another rather than the current SoCal/NY vs. the World structure.

Administered by Breeders’ Cup Limited, the Breeders’ Cup World Championships are subject to the racing regulations of the various jurisdictions in which the event is held. Breeders’ Cup works with its host jurisdictions to ensure that its policies and Breeders’ Cup standards are consistent. In addition to the host jurisdiction policies, Breeders’ Cup also sets policies and procedures as a condition of entry to the Championships.
The Breeders' Cup is not a state. What are they going to do- piggyback off the samples drawn by the state and do their own testing? Or maybe hire their own "Breeders' Cup Vets" and draw their own samples?

Maybe they could let the Europeans bring their own tests with them and we could use those. I have seen the Detection Times list (from which to decide on withdrawal times) presented by the British Horseracing Authority. Is this what the Breeders' Cup is talking about, and everyone should use? I would be interested to know if by "eliminate race-day medications in its Championships" the Breeders' Cup means anything more stringent than the British list.

The first positive is going to be an interesting story.

Excellent point. The BC idea should me North American racings - stop this global nonsense. Move it around as much as possible and give the people a shot to go see one live.
