1966 - little Bobby Joe Hill of Texas Western broke the back of basketball powerhouse Kentucky in the National Championship game stealing the ball twice within one minute - once from All American Louis Dampier and once from Tommy Kron - and getting a layup on the other end after the steals
it was the most exciting one minute of basketball I have ever seen
KY Coach Adolph Rupp would not allow black players on his team

DC's own Austin Carr (the 2nd greatest ever from DC behind Elgin Baylor imo)
drops 61 in an NCAA Tournament game
a record that still stands today more than 50 years later
Carr's 61-point game really wasn't out of character. He averaged 41.3 points over seven NCAA games from 1968-71, including games of 52, 52, 47 and 45 points. Film of the game against Ohio showed nine of his baskets came from behind what would have been today's 3-point arc, meaning he would have scored 70 in this era
his senior year he got 50 on Adolph Rupp's all white Kentucky team - as Notre Dame beat them on Kentucky's own home court

Larry Costello - the last of the NBA's 2 hand set shooters
was shooting them as late as '68 with the 76ers
by that time it looked really strange - like he didn't belong in the NBA

Akeem the Dream stood and watched (he thought he would be called for goaltending if he touched the ball) as Derek Wittenberg's air ball got dunked by NC State's Lorenzo Charles (r.i.p.) in the final second to win the National Championship. After the game Wittenberg jokingly claimed that it wasn't a shot - that it was a pass__________(~:/_____ A play that will live forever.

that was Washington Bullets Coach Dick Motta in 1978 when a reporter asked about the upcoming Championship Final game with the 6ers. The Bullets went on to win it all.
Fat women came to the game dressed up as opera singers
what a hoot it was

It actually started during the Spurs series after SA had won G1. The Spurs announcers said it. After the Bullets when up 3-1, Motta used it and gave credit to the Spurs announcers when using it. He said it again up 3-1 against the Sixers and that is when it got really hot.
This is my favorite memory from that season as a big Bullets fan. You don't see this kind of musical talent these days:

but if you are - I think you would enjoy this FB page - all about the great players - h.s., college, pro and playground from the DC area - I have many posts there as Adrian Cooper.

I'm from Baltimore, diehard city boy. I used to play hoops from late morning until 9:30 when the lights would go out at the rec center. Great respect for hoops in both Baltimore and DC.
My Dad was a huge Baltimore Bullets fan. I remember that a little, remember the move well and just kept following along. I used to watch all the games on snowy UHF channel 20. I was a big Bobby D and Kevin Grevey fan.
I've become a Thunder fan now that I live in OKC and have been a season ticket holder since inception, but I still have a soft spot for the Bullets as I'll always call them.

very young, I took the bus from DC to Baltimore to see Earl Monroe's first home game at the Civic Center.
everybody was thrilled by Earl the Pearl
he did stuff nobody had ever seen before
if Jack Marin, a white guy, got the ball - many of the black fans would yell out - "why don't you give the ball to the Pearl"
what a treat is was watching Monroe - and the way he excited the crowd

just about everybody would say Jim Brown was one of the greatest running back of all time.
he's the only back ever to average more than 100 yards per game
in 9 years in the NFL he never missed a game

Some players could easily transcend generations. I wonder what Jim Brown would do in today's NFL, in his era he was as big as a lot of the defensive lineman. My favorite back to watch was Barry Sanders.
