I caught a ride up to Cleveland from Fort Knox, Ky with a fellow guardsman who had a slick Olds 442. He spent almost all of that trip going over 100.
Another time I was hitching to Cleveland from Columbus and a guy picked me up who had an original Tbird. A nice guy, but he stopped off the interstate at several gas stations. I imagine he was collecting for numbers.

of course way before my time, but anyway, Jack Johnson was the first black heavyweight champion

although, blacks fought whites in the ring, they were not allowed to compete for the Championship, until Johnson chased Tommy Burns all over the globe to get his shot - Johnson crushed Burns

married to a white woman, his boldness infuriated white America

after he became Champion the great writer, Jack London, wrote an article calling for a "Great White Hope" to step up and win back the pride of the white race

London wrote - "Jim Jeffries must now emerge from his Alfalfa farm and remove the golden smile from Jack Johnson's face. Jeff, it's up to you. The White Man must be rescued."

even the New York Times got into the act - they wrote - " if the black man wins thousands and thousands of his ignorant brothers will justify claims of much more than physical equality with their white neighbors"

in what was billed as "The Fight of the Century" Jeffries was knocked down twice in the 15th round and his corner threw in the towel

the aftermath of the fight triggered race riots all over the country - many whites felt humiliated by the defeat of Jeffries

ironically, Johnson grew up in the South with a gang of white boys as his friends - he said " I grew up with white boys as my friends. I ate with them, played with them and slept at their homes. Their mothers game me cookies and I ate at their tables. No one ever taught me that white men were superior to me.

what a great story - here is the vid of Johnson defeating Jeffries

They showed his 68 point game against the Knicks on NBA TV today. And the refs fouled him out on two very questionable charges in the last 5 minutes. He should have been in the 70s. No 3 point line obviously, it was weird to watch. The game was played in 1977, but the video looked like it was from 1927, even was in black and white.

thanks for that post - I looked it up and YT had it - see link

on several plays he makes Walt Frazier look like he's not even in his league

Frazier was the best defender or at least one of the best in the NBA at that time

truly astonishing to see him use up Frazier like that

a look back at the GOAT - Wilt Chamberlain - commentary by Jerry West & Bill Russell

captures all his talents - fallaways, dunks, rebounds, assists, blocks

I had all but forgotten about his fallaways - he hits them from pretty far out

Russell talks about when Wilt got 62 on him - Wilt once had 55 bounds on the Celts

one year Wilt averaged 50 p.p.g. - I feel kinna sorry for so many of the Centers that had to go up against him - they didn't have a prayer - they must have felt humiliated

my fave part starts at 5:34 - the blocks - he really swats them down - it's almost comical - at 6:14 he swats down a shot from Havlicek from about 5 feet away_______________(-:\

factoid: in '67/'68 Wilt led the league in assists the only Center ever to do so

he gave us - his fans - an awful lot - we watched him in amazement

I pretty much only remember Wilt when he was with the Lakers, his game definitely changed, he started playing closer to the basket. Thanks for the video, his athleticism in his younger days was incredible.

one of the greatest YT NBA vids
Game 4 finals Celts vs. Lakers - 1984

Kareem elbows Bird in the head and they start jawing
it's broken up - Bird continues to crush - Kareem is frustrated and gets used up in several plays and fouls out
also in the vid - Bird butts Cooper into the stands
McHale clotheslines Rambis to the floor - Rambis gets up ready to fight but is restrained by other Lakers and helped up by Bird
Celts seal the win on an M.L. Carr steal and dunk - he was a much disliked player
Celts go on to win the Championship

What a shocker, Kareem with his cry baby face on constantly. I never liked him. I can't believe that game was almost 40 years ago.

one more story about Wilt

if somebody tried to dunk on him or got him mad for some reason

he would say to them:

"if you come into the paint again - I'm gonna knock you down on your ass"

one of my fave old Twilight Zone episodes - "The Fever" - the guy freaks out on a slot machine - you can search YT and see the whole episode - 5 clips

then below that one is my 2nd fave - cheap hood Rocky gets gunned down by cops - his "Guide" grants him any wish he wants - "A Nice Place to Visit"

he gets it all - luxurious pad - 3 gorgeous sexy babes surround him - crushing casinos - wins $40K in an hour at roulette - he wins every time - then he gets sick of it all and wants to leave "Heaven"

6'7" Joe Fortenberry is credited with being the first man to dunk a basketball in a game which he did in the 1936 Summer Olympics

it was documented in the New York Times

he was high scorer in the Gold Medal Final Game of the Olympics scoring 8 points in a 19-8 victory over Canada

the pic is him barely getting up high enough to slam in while playing AAU basketball in 1939 - the premiere hoops league before the NBA

not exactly spectacular but still - way to go Joe - it must have been a shock to the other players on the court
