Lawrence of Arabia is my favorite and the one I consider the best ever.

If we're talking about the Oscars (nominations announced today) my choice would be Bohemian Rhapsody but I don't think it will win.

Honorable mentions
  • Dr. Strangelove, 2001: a Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining and Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick.
  • Almost anything by John Ford.
  • Almost anything by Alfred Hitchcock.
  • Anything by Charlie Chaplin except A Countess From Hong Kong.

We can't even discuss movies here without getting into politics? All I said was that the best movie depends on your mood. How does that have deep political connotations?

P.S. The notion that I am a lefty is moronic. Check back and see the abuse I got here from mostpost, hcap, etc.

Tried to make this thread ANTI-POLITICS.

My apologies for being 'triggered' in my own anti-politics thread.

My apologies. Obviously read your post entirely the wrong way. While wanting to diverge away from politics, I did exactly that.

Interesting choices.

I've never been one to ever "get" Pulp Fiction.

I can see why you like both.

Thank you. You are a scholar and a gentleman.

Favorite movies for repeat watching, depending on my mood, are for entertainment and include "Heat", "Ronin", "Shawshank", "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", "The Outlaw Josie Wales", and many others. While I enjoy comedies, I rarely watch them more than once.

Another big recommendation is the "Justified" TV series available on DVD.

For the aura, atmosphere and acting, can't go wrong with The Hustler.

This can be a big problem if there are two or more of you deciding on the "best" movie at the moment.
Excellent point

The remastered version of “Lawrence of Arabia” is stunning on a good TV.

O’Toole at his zenith. David Lean took so many risks and captured such on film. The attack on Aqaba is amazing.

Lawrence of Arabia also gets my vote for best picture.

My current favorite is No Country for Old Men.

Today: Gone With The Wind

Tomorrow: Could be Good, Bad, and the Ugly or Reservoir Dogs or Titanic or What's Eating Gilbert Grape or French Connection or Shawshank Redemption (A Stephen King novella, part of a 4 novella collection. If there is a full, dedicated treatment of it by King, I don't know it.)

It's like the earlier poster said, the mood can change and one movie might be better than another for today.

I can always watch Phar Lap, The Man From Snowy River, Let it Ride, Die Hard and Hard Times.

To many to choose from to pick a Best Picture.
