One problem with racing

Someone is going to have to explain to me why Oaklawn and the Fair Grounds are running the New Orleans Ladies and The Azeri on the same day, at the same distance, for the same money.

Instead of having one great race with a large field they have one good field with 5 horses and one walkover prep with 5 horses.

It makes no sense that these kinds of things aren't coordinated a little better among tracks so that fans get to see one great race or two great races scheduled appropriately. It would generate more interest and a potentially larger handle for both tracks.

There is a lot of money to be made.

You really don't understand? These two tracks are competing against each other. They are a 500 miles apart and serve their own self interests. That is all they care about. "Racing" is not like the NFL or MLB where owners have the same interests. Racing, is competition, and state control means so much more than any other sport. That's why it is falling apart..........

Yea, but even Coke and Pepsi eventually figured out that certain things they were doing were hurting both of them.

Because we are fans of the biggest Sham in sports. They launder money...in some cases government money into their own pockets. We care about competitive balance.. they care about account balance that's it. It is run by "them" and for "them". this is why racing will be severely diminished if not eradicated in the coming decades. Sad but true.

On a side note...I'm trying to help more horses (like a cat chasing his tail). These are for Our Mims horse haven...take a look if interested. All proceeds go to them. http://www.ebay.com/sch/tah831/m.htm...id=p4340.l2562

Thanks

So you think the tracks carded these races this way to benefit the owners, trainers and jockeys?

The point is the tracks, the two tracks who decided to card these races in this way, are costing themselves money by making these stupid decisions. AND they're killing interest in the game by putting on two substandard races rather than one good one. I thought classhandicapper made a great point.

I think you missed my point. I was pointing out that they don't look beyond their own fences. I believe that is what Tom is referring to. they only care about who gets paid inside their own fences. If that means two sub standard races 500 miles apart, so be it. There definitely is only one 'I' in racing.

I agree. I don't know the logistics behind the scenes, but from a wagering and fan stand pointbit sure would make sense to not run these races against one another.
