My thinking now is there was a mechanical failure which may or may not have initiated by the flight crew. Often at these altitudes, sudden turbulence and weather forces force pilots to react hastily, often doing more damage than good. The 1st officer of the Airbus that crashed into Belle Harbor shortly after 911 was due to his sheering off the vertical stabilizer trying to right the plane in wake turbulence.
Typically foul play leaves fingerprints which emerge over time. MH370 happened 8 years ago and nothing conclusive suggest anything other than mechanical failure as a probable source. If the plane began breaking apart at 30,000 ft. its pieces would be so scattered that it might never be located intact enough to ever be fully understood.
