Sir Dragonet has been an absolute monster in both his starts. The manner of his wins is reminiscent of Fusaichi Pegasus prior to the 2000 Kentucky Derby. The only potential hole in his form is that both his wins were on soft courses.

Here he is winning the important prep, the Chester Vase:

Live longshot is Japan, a son of Galileo, who showed good stamina as a 2yo in a couple of starts. He won an important juvenile stakes--the Beresford--which has recently produced Sea The Stars, Saxon Warrior, Alamshar, Azamour, and the ill-fated St. Nicholas Abbey, among others.

He tends to plug along inconspicuously in the early stages but refuses to fade away when the real running starts and then ultimately finds another gear when the others are breathing fire.

Ran an even race in his 3yo debut in the Dante, one of the more productive Derby preps. That race is only 10.5 furlongs and was run at a very fast pace on firm ground.

Taking a shot on......

Madhmoon

As usual, Aidan O'Brien will take all the beating with his team of seven.
There's another Irish trained colt, though, that's worth considering.
Kevin Prendergast's Madhmoon has been crying out for a longer trip.

Races at 7 furlongs and a mile this year appeared on the short side.
He was doing his best running at the end and, while 10 furlongs may
turn out to be his best distance, this one has a good chance of getting
a mile and a half. Odds of close to 10/1 make him worth a small play.

Good luck to all at Epsom!

Should be noted that Madhmoon buried Derby second-favorite Broome in a Group 2 last year.

Broome has blossomed this year with the step up to 12 furlongs but nevertheless, Madhmoon's 3yo form is vaguely reminiscent of last year's winner Masar (also from the New Approach line). Like Madhmoon, Masar had been well-backed in his mile races (he was actually favored in the 2000 Guineas) but was lost in the betting for the Derby despite having favorable form over the top class Roaring Lion.

Ran a huge race to come out on top of the 4-horse blanket finish for 2nd. Good call.

Commentators before the race said it was a wide open affair and they were proved right with the winner getting just a 1/2 length on the rest to avoid an impossible 5-horse photo finish.

The winner, Anthony Van Dyck, was an also-ran in the BC Juvenile Turf last year, making him the second winner in a row (Masar last year) with that odd distinction.

Meanwhile the winner of the BC Juvenile Turf winner, Line of Duty, was well back in the field, just as 2017 winner Mendelssohn toiled in the Kentucky Derby.

Anthony Van Dyck had a somewhat counterintuitive form for a son of Galileo, winning handful of early season juvenile races before going on a declining pattern topped off by the aforementioned BC flop. His comeback victory in his Derby trial over 11.5 furlongs probably erased all concerns for serious fans (he was 4th choice), but for me he was lost in shuffle amid the bevy of Coolmore alternatives.

I wonder if O'Brien will be willing to send any of his other top 5-finishers (Japan, Broome, Sir Dragonet) to the US for the Belmont turf triple. He tends to send his second-tier colts for the NA races but with the exorbitant amount of money being offered by NYRA and the depth of his 3yo stable it would be great if he sent a Group 1-caliber starter (or two).

Great Finish

Tight finish in the Epsom Derby - Madhmoon ran a fine race @ 12-1.
The winner had an excellent turn of foot when it mattered.

All of the top finishers obviously liked firm ground.
Makes the chances of seeing them run in the US this year even better.
