The Downside of the Voided Claim Rule

So today at Santa Anita a horse had a claim voided against him for the third time in a row.

So the horse is essentially unclaimable. Whatever is causing the claims to be voided is obviously chronic. It ain't going away.

Can't the owner now pretty run him anywhere? If no one can claim him you can pretty much cherry pick a spot.

This is rather insane and the exact opposite of how the claiming game works.

Isn't there an option to say you want the horse no matter what ?

Seems odd the horse is able to get by the vet before the race, but not after three times in a row. Don't these guys keep notes?

There should be a rule in place like there is for bleeders. Too many episodes, you're out. But they'll never do that in Cali because they don't have many horses as it is. It is hard to believe this could happen to a horse that just ran in the Breeders' Cup 18 months ago.

The larger issue is they've created this black hole where horses aren't lame enough to not race but lame enough to not be sold?

How on earth do you Handicap this horse in a race?

Oh, you mean the 1L in the DRF doesn't mean 1st time lame?

There can be a shady side to this and that's the Vets who determine who is sound and whether or not the claim should be voided. Does the Vet make the same call if his buddy is about to lose one when it might climb up the ladder?

I don't trust anyone when it comes to this stuff.

Take the ship and win at Del Mar for instance. When it first started IMO a lot of outfits would ship some of the ones they wanted to get rid of. Since the claiming rule changed I believe that they send more out here who are well meant to take advantage of the bonus. If they ship one who isn't sound they get him/her right back.

I see both sides of the issue.

What horse?

Like CJ notes, it's odd that the horse is getting past the pre-race vet check. You'd also think the horse goes on the vet list each time after a voided claim.

Do they list what the void was due to? It's funny that two straight voided claims and it hasn't deterred the claim drops. Common knowledge would say there is something seriously wrong with the horse. But the trainers know a lot more about what is going on than any of us.

No, since this is a N1X race it means that the horse has not injured 2 legs in the time period stated.

This is also one of the issues, this is still a very fast horse. He is probably faster than 99% of the horses in training right now.
