Durkin did a lot of homework before the race call. When Cigar won, Durkin had already written down what he would say. He knew a lot about the horses he was calling.
It was unfortunate that his anxiety and panic attacks got the best of him. It's a stressful job made worse by people expecting perfection. An announcer calls the wrong number or misses a horse and all his good work is cast aside. Obviously he still has some gas left in the tank since he's still working.
What made Trevor superb was his knowledge of a horse's looks and actions before a race. Plus at the top of his game he was unparalleled at picking up action behind the leaders.
