Claim + Sale?

The 3rd race at KEE today was an unrestricted filly/mare claiming race ($50K).

The commentator noted two of the mares running were cataloged to be entered in a sale next Friday the 22nd, and gave out their hip numbers. Is it common for horses that have already been cataloged for a sale to run in a race? What happens if somebody claims the horse?

A horse can be in a sale and also run if they want, There is no stipulation that said horse HAS to be in the sale. If the horse is claimed, The horse must be withdrawn from the sale because of the claiming rules pertaining to the sale of a claimed horse.

Yes there is a horses of racing age sale at Keeneland the last day of the meet. So Keeneland has an interest in promoting that the horse is for sale.

As it turns out, one of the horses in the race also cataloged in the sale (the race's winner Short Summer Dress) WAS claimed. I take it from your answer (btw, thanks for that!), the mare must now be withdrawn from the sale.
