Assuming the article accurately describes the study, the study has serious problems. It appears to assume that all the benefits of declines in Chinese exports would accrue to US firms, and none will go to other countries such as Vietnam. It also ignores the cost of those new jobs to American consumers. See the previous post here regarding the cost to consumers of new jobs in the washing machine industry.

We should also know that the Coalition for a Prosperous America is a lobbying organization funded by trade unions, farm groups, and other businesses that oppose free trade and lobby for restrictive tariffs on imports.

That's the leap we're making here?

Very weird stance to make on tariff policy. Most non-socialist people don't like the government telling them how to spend their money.

It is not a leap, it is a fact. Ever hear of a trade embargo?

The government prints the money and through its laws and policies dictates how you spend the money they print.

Not only does the government tell you how to spend your money, the government regulates your behavior, criminalizing certain behaviors.

None of the above is exactly new or surprising to anyone who lives in a society.

These tariff policy's set out to accomplish many things. Look at one set as a consumption tax on people who spend more on cars than kids, many like to have a look driving that Mercedes or BMW so for them I hope we get $15K to $20K from them just because their nose is glued to the ceiling. Another consumption tax hits garbage cheep shit from Walmart, our landfills are filling up with this crap. The final part of this is leverage against China & Mexico, both are guilty of drug and human trafficking.

Gee...you make it sound as if the government is doing us a FAVOR by printing the money. They don't exactly print that money and pass it OUT to us, you know...we actually have to go out and EARN it.

When the government classifies certain items or activities as "illegal" and prohibits us from buying or participating in them...we, as citizens, can still partake of these prohibited items and activities...thus daring the government authorities to come and arrest us. That's part of living in a "free society". But the tariffs are more insidious, IMO...because they force the citizens to contend with price increases that they cannot avoid...even by breaking the law.

How do you get the above thought from my post?

A post accurately describing certain government functions. Governments regulate behavior, which includes to an extant, the spending of your money.

I don't see how this fact is a surprise to anyone, who lives in a society.

You must be copying your debating strategy from Boxcar. We were talking here about the government telling us what to do with our money while we engage in LEGAL affairs, like the purchasing of consumer goods...and you bring the illegal activities into the equation...as if this has anything whatsoever to do with the topic of discussion here.

Amazing that the above post came from the man who stared a thread about "too much freedom".

Living in a "free" society does give you permission to commit crime. Even a person who lives in a totalitarian society can partake in the prohibited activities and dare his government to arrest him.

If anything living in a free society includes a greater burden to act trustworthy, as you have more freedom to act.

Really some prohibition, i.e. tariffs are insidious, because if you commit a crime, there is no benefit gained by the criminal act? Wow!

A question. What do you believe is less expensive to a money earning citizen of a society, the paying of a 5% tariff on a product from Mexico or the expenses to provide housing, medical services, food, education, cash assistance, etc. to families entering illegally from Mexico?

He's a Trumpist who scrambles to defend any and all...

Telling a consumer to buy American is no different than telling a consumer you have to buy insurance or pay a tax...

It works for him in this scenario because its Trump telling you what to do... not Obama.

Actually, I responded to Clocker and ET questions about government telling us how to spend our money. Simple fact governments regulate behavior, which includes what activities you are legally allowed to spend money on.

Governments regulate trade even to the extent of embargoes.

If you live in a society you do not carte blanche to act. The government determines what is and what is not a legal activity, including what you can legally purchase.

Will the 5% tariffs on Mexican products put an end to the costs associated with illegal Mexican immigration? Do you get out much?

Of course it is relevant, because if the money was spent in a foreign country there would be no tax revenue to help any of the states. The possibility of foreign investment returning the money is really a minor variable.

If you drive a car, the government tells you must buy auto insurance. So what is your point? You are right it is no different than the government requiring you to spend your money on auto insurance.

But you have a choice, you don't have to drive a car, and you don't have to buy a car subject to a tariff, but you can. You have choices.

I see you avoided answering my question. I can ask you the same do you get out much?

Why is the tariff being levied? Do you know the cost it imposes on Mexico's economy versus the small impact, 5%, it has on the purchaser?
