A voice of reason. Ray is exactly right.

Hotel rates 5 months before an event don't mean a heck of a lot. Could be a "just in case" scenario. The hotels can always lower their rates for those two dates, if the BC stays put, later on and nobody would notice a temporary rate hike for two days in the future that never happened.

Being from KY I would very much like to see the BC here but seeing that Del Mar has done a pretty good job getting their fatality numbers down it would make more sense to let Del Mar open a week earlier and host the BC and they can hash out the financials between the 2 tracks.

Del Mar isn't as precarious as Santa Anita, but if they have a bad summer meet they will be under the gun soon enough.

Southern California racing may actually be in its death spiral. It's not clear yet. But if it is, the BC is taking a big risk by sticking with the region.

Churchill has more injuries than SA, so not sure how that move is going to be any safer for the BC.

Heard some conflicting intel - what exactly will they be doing with the dirt over the next few months? I've heard everything from redo the base to redo the entire surface to do nothing.

Whatever they do\dont do, we'll have no idea of the impact until late Sept. I'd think it would be prudent to move the BC elsewhere.

It's not about safety, it's about the media attention that it will get in California vs elsewhere

Just getting the Stronach brainiacs out of the picture is a good thing here.
FINGER LAKES is nice in late October - lots of parking!

If a horse breaks down in the BC, it isn't going to matter if it is run on the moon this year, it will get plenty of media attention IMO.

If a horse breaks down on national TV this year, it will get plenty of media attention, trust me.

Even with the waiting period, CHRB still had two opportunities to close Santa Anita during this meet, and passed on both of them. Whether it's 1 day or 10 days, they still need to actually have a spine to use this power. All the evidence to date suggests otherwise.

It's not safety per se. It's two things:

1. There's a significant chance (I'd say 10 percent) that Santa Anita will not be racing as of BC day. So there's a 10 percent chance of utter catastrophe for the BC. There's no such issue with Churchill.

2. Even if SA is racing, the publicity will be 10 times greater. Indeed, if there are any breakdowns during the fall meeting, the media will seize on it and there will be all sorts of criticism of the BC for not moving the event. It's just a much worse scenario than will unfold at CD.

It could be the first week of November, but that's ok, Lake Canadaigua should be frozen over by that time which will give everyone the opportunity to play a hockey game before the first race.
