forget the rail for a minute...
So who wins this race?
Is Maximum Security going to just run these off their feet?

Robert,
Why is Ortiz on Bourbon War? Did he have the choice? Not taking anything away from Saez. Just wondering.

Politics, prior commitment, 21 Derby Points already in the bank, and just general conservative good sense(The Servis horse MaxSec debuted for mclm 16K and is not a certainty/unexposed-wildcard).

ORTIZ
JOCKO,
Jockey's like (us) are sometimes TORN between two horses. I mentioned Maximum Security (first), the consensus was UNPROVEN . Based on the Fountain of Youth , Bourbon War should have no problem at the distance. I would favor , Bourbon War OVER Maximum Security this Saturday.

I’m sure he had a choice and my guess is his agent feels Bourbon War is the better Derby prospect.

I've got to try a Harvey Wallbanger before I bet him for place.

There's also some short term red flags with Maximum Security. After his blowout win February 20, the horse didn't work back until March 22, 30 days later. And one ought to use the term "work" loosely, as he went a 1/2 mile in a pedestrian :52 4/5 (actually, a curious :52.95 going by Equibase), good for slowest work of the day at that distance out of 63 workers.
It's almost as if he was simply sent out there to meet any workout criteria Gulfstream might have so that he was eligible to start (most tracks require a work within 30 days of a race). Is the reason he was entered for maiden claiming 16K suddenly rearing it's ugly head?
Of course, who knows what goes on as far as clocking works go at a place like Palm Meadows Training center (never mind what goes on in the barn of a 45% trainer). For all we know, the trainers simply enter the workout times themselves.

The Tapit colt Bourbon War will cement himself as one of the top derby prospects after this race.
Underneath you have to use Harvey Wallbanger, never worse than 2nd in 5 starts. Code of Honor ran a good race, but think the pace setup benefitted him even more than it might have BW. The wildcard Maximum Security. Spaulding above did a good job outlining the glaring potential issues with this horse. He might be my biggest concern to just run away with the race but I don’t think his first try at 2 turns will be a winning one.

Lookin' forward to the Florida . . .
Code of Honor is the class of the field, Shug says the colt is “looking forward to what he does”, and JohnnyV is hot right now; class laughs at pace.
Code of Honor to win.
Best of racing luck.

I was surprised to see that only Bourbon War has gone a mile1/8th before.
Bodexpress has the profile of a wild card.

There are only 4 Derby prep races ran before the Big 5 final preps at 9F for 2 and 3YOs.
2 are at Aqueduct with the 2YO Remsen and the Withers. The other 2 are on synthetic as their only or final prep in the El Camino Real at Golden Gate and the Jeff Ruby at Turfway (used to be Spiral Stakes).
These haven't been popular options of Derby winners in the last couple of decades outside of Animal Kingdom back in 2011 using the Spiral as his lone Derby prep race.

For points. Always Dreaming ran a 9F AlOC before the Florida Derby. Doesn't seem to be a common approach however.
