Favorite Kubrick lines
Spartacus
Batiatus: (to man carrying umbrella)Sun’s over there. (to guard)I have to pay these people.
Lolita
Quilty: (after being shot by Humbert) I could fix for you to attend executions. How would you like that? Just you there, nobody else, just watching. Watch. You like watching, Captain? Not many people know that the chair is painted yellow. You’d be the only guy in the know. Imagine your friends. You could tell them.
Dr Strangelove
General Jack D. Ripper: I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
2001 A Space Odyssey
Hal: I know I've made some very poor decisions recently.
A Clockwork Orange
Alex: (narrating) I had not cut into any of Dim’s main cables and so, with the help of a clean castook, the red red croovy soon stopped and it did not take long to quieten the two wounded soldiers down in the snug of the Duke of New York.
Barry Lyndon
Narrator: Barry's first taste of battle was only a skirmish against a small rearguard of Frenchmen who occupied an orchard beside a road down which, a few hours later, the English main force would wish to pass. Though this encounter is not recorded in any history books, it was memorable enough for those who took part.
The Shining
Jack Torrance: Wendy, Darling, Love of my life, I’m not gonna hurt ya. You didn’t let me finish my sentence. I said I’m not gonna hurt ya. I’m just gonna bash your brains in.
Full Metal Jacket
Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: I bet you’re the kind of guy that would **** a person in the ass and not even have the God**** common courtesy to give him a reach around.

I never know how to proceed in threads of this type...
Is it proper to supply an amusing line or two from different directors' movies...or would that be considered "off topic"?

"Recruiting brutal young roughs into the police, proposing debilitating and will-sapping techniques of conditioning. Oh, we've seen it all before in other countries. The thin end of the wedge. Before we know where we are, we shall have the full apparatus of totalitarianism. This young boy is a living witness to these diabolical proposals. The people - the common people - must know, must see. There are great traditions of liberty to defend. The tradition of liberty is all. The common people will let it go. Oh yes. They will sell liberty for a quieter life - that is why they must be led, sir, driven, pushed!!"
A Clockwork Orange, of course.

"Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find:
- One forty-five caliber automatic
- Two boxes of ammunition
- Four days' concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine,
vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.
Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff."

Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake:
Colonel, Colonel, I must know what you think has been going on here.
Col. "Bat" Guano:
You wanna know what I think?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake:
Yes.
Col. "Bat" Guano:
I think you're some kind of deviated prevert. I think general Ripper found out about your prevertion, and you were organizing some kind of mutiny of preverts.
After Mandrake asks him for Change to call the president on a pay phone:
"you don't think I'd go into combat with loose change in my pocket do You?"

Maddog's "no fighting in the War Room" quote of course tops any list.
Another one I remember from Dr Stranglove is
"Mein Fuhrer, I can walk!", as the mad Doctor gets up from his wheelchair.

So many good line from Dr. Strangelove....
[ Strangelove's plan for post-nuclear war survival involves living underground with a 10:1 female-to-male ratio]
General "Buck" Turgidson: Doctor, you mentioned the ratio of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so-called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?
Dr. Strangelove: Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.
Ambassador de Sadesky: I must confess, you have an astonishingly good idea there, Doctor.

Door Gunner: Git some! Git some! Git some, yeah, yeah, yeah! Anyone who runs, is a VC. Anyone who stands still, is a well-disciplined VC! You guys oughta do a story about me sometime!
Private Joker: Why should we do a story about you?
Door Gunner: 'Cuz I'm so f*****' good! I done got me 157 dead gooks killed. Plus 50 water buffalo, too! Them's all confirmed!
Private Joker: Any women or children?
Door Gunner: Sometimes!
Private Joker: How can you shoot women or children?
Door Gunner: Easy! Ya just don't lead 'em so much! Ain't war hell?

By even suggesting that any movie could compete with any of Kubrick's
movies drops you several levels in my estimation. Nah! Just kidding. Compared to some of the other threads around here, you would be perfectly in line.

Detested FMJ at the time and still do. Not a fan of anti war, anti military films. No love for Dr. Strangelove either for a very long time, although in recent years have lightened up a bit and can now see the humor.

I love antiwar and anti-military films. I am not so naive to think that we can do without (or will ever do without) either.

"What is your major malfunction, numbnuts!"
As good a tagline as any to describe Kubricks' movies - man and his bruised ego, (and his machines) running amok.
