Copingaway broke down in the Ft Lauderdale yesterday at GP. Week in and week out he brought his best. 😥😥 just turned 4, had 28 starts.

He was one of my favorite horses. Sounded like a bad luck incident rather than unsoundness. RIP Copingaway.

Personal Flag, Cryptoclearance, Forty Niner, Waquoit. That was a hell of a nice field.
What races did Forty Niner win? I had him in the derby when he lost to the filly. The late surge that came up short that day seemed to kind of epitomize his career.

He was also the 2 year old champion; won a bunch of stakes races in New York and missed the Breeders' Cup, but the BC winner that year really stunk (Success Express) so they gave the Eclipse to Forty Niner.
I bet him in the 1988 Derby. He had a weird trip, racing up with Winning Colors at first, dropping back midway through the race, and the making a second run and closing a ton of ground to finish 2nd, losing by a neck to the perfect trip winner. (Risen Star, who had an even worse trip in the race from post 1, came back and scored big in the Preakness and Belmont. He might have been the best of the crop (he had a shortened career) and he may have been the best male racehorse Secretariat ever sired.)
I liked Forty Niner, a lot, and that Woodward (which I actually saw; I was back in New York that weekend and went to the track) was his best race.

That horse had like a dozen starts within the first 2 months of the year last year. The horse had potential but was poorly managed IMO.

What horrible news! Just saw a tweet that her foal, a Galileo filly, survived.
She was one of my favorites. RIP.

ROYAL DELTA HAS PASSED
Royal Delta passed last night at Coolmore Ireland while foaling
a filly, who survived.
Sire is Galileo, a highly interesting match.
i'm positive we have fond memories of Royal Delta, all heart
and class and a three time Eclipse winner.
Benjamin Leone ,owner of Besilu Stables took a giant leap into this game
about ten years ago; I'm quite famiiar with his background, hoping
he continues to support racing both in America and in Europe despite
this terible loss.

I thought it was a terrible match. She was a top dirt mare, yet bred to a turf stallion. Makes zero sense to me.
Sorry to hear of her passing though. It sounds as though she wasn't physically built to be a mother. Hope the little one makes it.
