Ahh, the memories of leaving Aqueduct after a day's races and walking towards the subway station to go home, confronted with the open door of a mid-70's mid-size sedan and the voice of temptation calling out to each one of us "Meadowlands car here, Meadowlands!"

If I had been brave enough at some point to ask the man "How am I going to get back home to Staten Island?" and received a satisfactory answer I might have succumbed to that temptation.

This thread makes no sense. They built a new grandstand on what used to be the backstretch quite a few years ago that had been in use since. The structure being torn down hasn't been used in years. The only story might be why it took so long to tear it down.

Will you feel the same when they tear down Aqueduct?
It's the final end of a place where many fond memories occurred. Sitting there unused , it is still there.
I feel the same way everytime I see the outer turf course smoothering the old inner-dirt track that was such a great time of year.
Nostalgia.

I get upset every time I drive past where the old Roosevelt Raceway was. I'd probably still be betting harness races if Roosevelt was around. I spent plenty of time at Yonkers in the old days too, but the current version isn't worth the traffic.

Aqueduct is not unused and won't be torn down. Sorry for the late edit...but putting in the Outer Turf might be the best move we have made in my lifetime. I liked the Inner too, but the Main Track works fine, probably fairer, and we added something that has been a HUGE benefit to us, especially given the needs as we work on Belmont.

And McDonalds discontinued the McRib Sandwhich as a business benefit, but I still don't like it!

A better analogy would actually be when we rebuild Belmont. In that case, I will be excited about the new structure and not miss the current one. I'm sorry the Meadowlands basically stopped having a thoroughbred meet however many years ago. That I miss going to, as I did quite frequently in the 80s and 90s, but an unused structure that was replaced...so what. It was hardly some great architectural structure.

I was less than a year old when Roosevelt closed, but my in-laws live in the community that was built where the track and grandstand stood. I always wonder what could have been had the corrupt owners kept racing going until the slots arrived.

I can remember in the late 70's when they had harness racing at Hollywood Park, every once in a while Meadowland horses would ship in and destroy the best of the locals. I was just starting to go to the track and had no idea how inferior the racing was I was watching. I got to see Niatross destroy the track record on cruise control.
