Windows Update problems

The problem is with all browsers. I tried deleting apps and plug ins, reinstalling, so far nothing works. When I reboot the computer, it seems okay for a while but the problems come back. Fortunately it's not terrible, just annoying and windows update gave me these problems. Hard to believe that the system restore and reinstall didn't correct it.

if you reached the end of fixes and still cant stand it....

format your system and re-install windows...(if you have CD/Flash)

save what you need first cause all will be gone......

I thought about that but it's easier to buy another computer. I found a good deal at bestbuy on a Lenovo for $404, and it was more ram (12), a faster processor, and a 2TB hard drive, so it's an upgrade from my Del, which has 8 Ram, 3.O GHZ processor and 1 TB hard drive.I film a lot of videos so the bigger hard drive comes in handy.

After I get it and install my programs and copy all of my files to it, I'll format the Dell, reinstall windows and sell it. I usually buy a new computer every three or four years anyway this way I don't have to go through the hard drive failure, and I can usually sell the old one for half of what I paid for it. Of course, years ago you couldn't do that, the computers were too expensive.

Well, it turns out that I had to return that Lenovo computer. I copied my files from my external hard drive to it and the problem transferred to the Lenovo, so apparently the files on my external drive were corrupted, too. This all started minutes after the last windows update.

So I restored the Lenovo to its original settings and returned it to Best Buy and I'm trying to deal with the problem on my Dell. It's getting better. I ran all sort of free software such as Windows Repair from Tweaking.com. The taskbar is functioning now, and that was the biggest problem. I also ran scannow from command prompt, the first time it showed no errors, the second time it found errors in windows and fixed them. Seemed to help.

I'd buy ( or get a d/l copy) of Win 10 and start from scratch...

Microsoft customer service gave me a link to reinstall windows 10, and believe it or not, that didn't work.

When mcaffee checks my system it automatically does a scan on both hard drives, but I'm going to try to run some tests on the external drive just to be sure. Today it's running much better, seems like I'm making progress.

I spoke too soon, back arrow on browser still isn't working, although it works on some sites.

Odd that you post this again as this thread was (among a couple similar) initially that got me to start considering building a new computer. I hate to do it because my six-year-old Win 7 model I use now (i7 2600@3.4 with 16 GB RAM) is plenty solid and bought it specifically so I could make it last. And I have, adding RAM, GPU, PSU - some of the little things along the way to keep it fresh and happy - and was just about to pop in an SSD since hard drives over a half decade old that run 24 hours a day scare me.

So why do I want to do it? Don't want Win8 or Win10 and am sick to death of bitching about Microsoft and their malware disguised as garbage updates and leaving it at that. 100 times I've tried to make the switch to Linux (Ubuntu seems most likely but I don't know much) and just can't muster up the nerve to risk catastrophe trying to partition and install and run dual OS when I use this CPU constantly and for everything. I even bought an external backup HD thinking that might swell up my guts to do it. Nah, now I just back up the same crap three times a day in three different formats.

So, the new plan is to gradually build something new and load it with Linux right from the start. Keep this one rolling along as old faithful and take my time with the new one, feeling no pressure to make the switch to Ubuntu until I feel totally ready for it. Run this one until it then, or until MS infects my computer with an update I don't want and didn't ask for, and probably eventually turn it into a Turf Paradise live video stream machine outputting to a television. And a good backup for if I make a mess out of building something and it fails a month in.

It seems like crazy overkill, but I've had it with Windows and your saga is EXACTLY the sort of thing I've got zero patience for and after ordering a PSU, case, SDD, and HDD and trying to get motivated to get to work on the rest -- I think you've gotten me motivated again.

Your old faithful is still good...

A SSD Drive would makes tons of a difference..the speed will astound you..

Samsung & Crucial are most reputable and will last...

Dont be afraid of Windows 10.....with that and a SSD you'll be very happy.

There is a learning curve with win 10 but so what....

It isn't the software itself that I'm hating on. It's the company and it's methods. I finally gave up on trying to force MS to let me select which updates and when I could install them by prompting me when one is available. That was okay, I could wait a few days or so, read a bit, and then do it when it was convenient. But then it became impossible to do that consistently. I gave up. Now these updates just hijack the computer when it feels like it. They've given me headaches in the past and if they are going to do that, then at least let me take a friggin tylenol and then prepare for the headache.

This new game of trying to scam you into updating and corral users like sheep into what they think you should be running is enough to get me to move on. I always liked MS, even when I was annoyed that DOS was rendered obsolete and was brought into the GUI age of windows. It made sense but then they started to really want to just control your computer. From the OS to browser, they were great at cornering the entire market. And then the products get shitty. The only reason anyone sticks with Explorer these days is because they can't figure out how to download Chrome or Firefox and are creatures of habit. That's MS model now. Capture the customer first, force them to use your product, and then as a lower priority, make it worth their time to use it. They seem content to force you to use it, lately by any means they can think of, and then give you zero incentive beyond that to actually want it.

I miss the days when I had some control over my own computer and I ran the OS instead of the OS running my computer. MS wants the latter these days with little real upside for the end user aside from continuing to dominate the market as to make it difficult or impractical to switch away. I'm just sick of hating on MS and screaming every time my settings somehow revert to auto-update and then doing nothing but continuing to bitch. Maybe I will hate Linux and go back to what I'm comfortable with. But I've got to give it a chance and this seems like most painless way. There really needs to be a legitimate competitor that offers an alternative and it seems like they are getting there. I just want to do my part instead of being part of the problem that I whine about constantly.

I did a registry tweak a few months back and with the MicroSoft getting sued ,I havent seen any request for updates..they are gone from my PC

Yup, I did the same. Point is, I shouldn't have to jump through such hoops. People flock to pay obscene amounts to get the latest version of a crappy telephone that changes size slightly every year and has a fruit on it. MS has to drag people kicking and screaming at gunpoint. There's a problem there.

I probably would have disagreed with you before this latest update. I never had any serious problems with other updates, but as soon as this one finished installing and I rebooted, the problems started, so it had to be the update. After reading windows forums, other users have had taskbar and back arrow browser problems caused by windows updates.

I installed an SSD drive in my HP laptop and it is great.

I still have Windows7. Knock on wood but since installing GWX Control panel; blocking automatic updates; and never using Internet Explorer life has been good. I research each mandatory or recommended Windows7 update and bet I only install about 1 out of 10 of them.

Now that I have these problems, I have to keep the windows update active because it could correct them.
