Is weight off after a winning race a positive or negative sign?

Do you mean the horse weighs less, or is carrying less weight?

i don't think you can simply say yes or no. the weight that a horse carries is what is called a "dependent variable". it is a reflection of a myriad factors. a horse can be carrying less weight today simply because it is being ridden today by a bug boy. is this a negative? in a route race it may be, as the top boys like john velasquez and manny franco et al., have a superior sense of pace occurring in the race. in a sprint race maybe not, especially at 5 or 5.5 furlongs, where, having an accurate clock in one's head is less important.
this is just one scenario, there are endless others.
if i was you i would give up trying to simplify things in analysis of a horse race and evaluate them on a case by case basis.

I'm guessing the OP means the weight of the horse. Guessing. If the horse won, whatever weight he was at that time was probably where he should be. He won. Usually you have to have your ducks in a row to win a horse race. So I'd say, a significant loss of weight probably is a negative. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Lasix encourage water loss? If the horse ran on Lasix, you could probably expect a little weight loss as the horse gets it out of his system. Again, if I understand Lasix correctly.
