Velazquez going to Santa Anita to Ride for Baffert
Riding three Baffert horses Friday, including his two in the G1s. Interesting...

Well he could do a lot worse than hall of famer Johnny V!

Why is Santa Anita running G1s on a Friday? Seems bizarre.

Opening day? It is very weird.

They used to do this regularly, I remember Azeri winning the Zenyatta stakes when it was on a weekday.
Honestly, gives me a reason to handicap the whole card.
I am not a huge fan of these 1 off days where all the graded races are thrown on one card. I get why it works for the tracks but leaves a lot of days with nothing really to look forward to from a big race perspective.

Baffert didn't know if Van Dyke would make it back in time from injury to take his calls.

I saw that story, still seems interesting though. Has JV ever rode for Baffert?

That's an interesting thought and I respect your opinion, but the "big races" often aren't very bettable so it's okay if they put them all on one card.

He would of used Rosario but he couldn't stand the late move to finish second.

A quick poke-around shows Velasquez-Baffert combining in the 2014 Ruffian on Fiftyshadesofhay. He also rode champion Indian Blessing for Baffert in a number of her stakes wins in the late 2000’s. That’s just from looking at Wikipedia pages of some of the stakes JV has won. I’m sure there are others.
So obviously not the go-to guy, but not totally unknown to each other in top races.

I am pretty sure this was a move in respect to DVD, this way its a 1 off.
Mike or Victor would look elsewhere rather than a 1 off situation. Certainly Express Train is very highly thought of, though just a maiden winner.

I'm surprised he didn't use Morey Amsterdam.

The opening weekend stakes races are preps for the BC, I guess they are trying to spread them out to all three days. There are 9 stakes, all graded except one. IMO better this way than to squeeze them into one card.
