Definitely understand why they would cancel on Friday.

I support these sorts of things. Anything to make the sport safer.

But I think it really does represent a sea change. Santa Anita, of course, won't even run a card when the track is projected to be sloppy or muddy. And Aqueduct and east coast tracks have historically run even in extreme cold or snow. I think this is a welcome change.

When was the last time Aqueduct ran when it was in the 20s and WINDY (winds are supposed to be 20-30mph on Friday afternoon, gusting to almost 40mph)

Name it...

It hasn't happened in decades

As late as 2005, they ran in these sorts of conditions and canceled a card in the middle of the day.

Yes, we have gotten better at cancelling earlier, which benefits all stakeholders. A rare instance of racing becoming more proactive.

My sincerest of apologies.

So now poor, slightly underage high school seniors like I was will no longer have their will and resolve hardened by hour and 45 minute trips via bus, ferry and subway only to arrive at Aqueduct and find the card cancelled. (Think it happened twice - once high school, once college)

Hurrah for safety, boo for character building!
