Ukraine is strategically located for both Russia's and Europe's defense, has a lot of energy natural resources, and has some very rare and strategic natural resources for chip making.
In other words, everyone has a few reasons to want to have influence in Ukraine.
The US/west has been meddling in Ukraine politics going all the way back to McCain and democrats trying to get the people to overthrow the Russia friendly government. We are not innocent in all this.
Russia has been aggressive and given the Ukrainians and west every reason to worry.
IMO, both sides are lead by sociopaths that are willing to put natural resources and security (ironically from the other side's sociopaths) ahead of the innocent people of Ukraine. The major difference is that the US/west uses underhanded methods and Putin uses the military. But both sides lie and use propaganda to convince their own populations about how bad and crazy the other side is when they are both just fighting over the resources.
I've given up all hope.
I am 100% convinced there is a correlation between high level business, media, and political success and being a sociopath. Both sides are full of idiots and sociopaths.

Old enough the Ukrainians know how to fly and maintain them.
F-16 first flew in '74. MiG-29 in '77.

Unlike some, I fully realize why MiGs are the only option available to Ukraine at the moment.
